Did you know that Vezir Han was built by a powerful Ottoman family? The Köprülü family to be exact. Five of its members served as Grand Viziers to the Sultan. That’s why it’s called Vezir Han. Vezir means Grand Vizier.

Vezir Han is located in the Fatih district of Istanbul in the Çemberlitaş neighborhood. It’s a large han a type of caravanserai. It was built between 1659 and 1660. The inscription on Vezir Han confirms this. It also states that it was built to be included in the Köprülü Külliyesi complex.

Imagine the skilled craftsmen. They worked tirelessly to build this impressive structure. Gold manufacturers once thrived within Vezir Han’s walls. Sadly today it is in a dilapidated state. You can still see the sultan’s tuğra his monogram above the main gateway. A testament to its glorious past.

The 1894 earthquake damaged Vezir Han considerably. Two of the rooms were completely destroyed. Six others were badly damaged. These rooms were once home to nineteen rooms of Istanbul’s Georgian Catholic community. They housed Georgians who had come to Istanbul. These rooms belonged to the Bomonti Georgian Catholic Church. They were recorded under the name of Madam Lusi Köçeoğlu. The start of World War I mismanagement and unresolved ownership issues led to the church losing these rooms. It’s a poignant story of a community’s displacement.

Today Vezir Han stands as a reminder of a bygone era. A silent witness to the rise and fall of empires. It showcases the craftsmanship of the Ottoman period. Despite its current condition Vezir Han continues to fascinate. It still whispers tales of its vibrant past. A glimpse into Istanbul’s rich history. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
