Founded in 1897 the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association MVMA has a rich history. It all began with a meeting of thirteen veterinary students. They aimed to create a state veterinary organization. Dr Reynolds from the University of Minnesota was the only employed veterinarian at the time. The MVMA’s early focus was on large animals like horses cattle swine and sheep. Annual meetings were initially held in St Paul. Later they rotated between Minneapolis and St Paul. The meetings evolved. They initially focused on large animals. Small animal sessions were added in 1943 extending the meeting to three days. Public health and regulatory sessions further increased the meeting duration to four days. The MVMA published more papers from their meetings than any other veterinary association in the country. Imagine the dedication and collaboration that produced such a vast amount of research. The MVMA even hosted several AVMA national meetings. These included gatherings in 1902 1928 1955 1969 1993 and 2005. The organization issued its first Code of Ethics in 1911. It has been revised multiple times since then stressing professionalism and proper conduct. The MVMA’s influence grew. They started with a secretary-treasurer for daily business. A full-time executive secretary was hired in 1970. The MVMA’s staff grew. Today it employs several full-time and part-time employees. The MVMA established an Academy of Veterinary Medical Practice in 1974. This provided guidelines for continuing education credits. It gave credibility to veterinarians committed to lifelong learning. A Women’s Auxiliary of the MVMA played a role too. It started in 1935 supporting veterinary students and promoting the profession. The Auxiliary eventually disbanded in 1999. The MVMA continues its tradition of offering ongoing continuing education. Seminars and clinics are regularly offered. The annual meeting emphasizes education. The MVMA continues to partner with the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. They contribute to the White Coat Ceremony and sponsor events for students. The MVMA plays a critical role in Minnesota’s veterinary landscape. Its dedication to education advocacy and service has shaped veterinary medicine in the state for over a century. The MVMA’s story is one of dedication collaboration and progress. It shows how a small group of veterinary students launched a legacy of excellence.
