In the twilight of the 19th century, Denmark embarked on an ambitious project: Vestvolden. This “Western Rampart,” stretching 14 kilometers, was a testament to Denmark’s determination to defend Copenhagen. Right here, before us, lies Vestvolden Voldpunkt 15, a silent witness to this era. Vestvolden wasn’t just a wall of earth and brick. It was a symbol of the political tensions brewing in Denmark. Its construction, between 1888 and 1892, was the largest project of its time, employing up to 2,000 workers. Vestvolden Voldpunkt 15 played its part in this massive undertaking. The rampart became a pawn in a power struggle between the ruling Højre party and the opposition Venstre. The Højre government, led by Prime Minister J.B.S. Estrup, pushed through funding for Vestvolden, including Voldpunkt 15, despite parliamentary opposition. This fueled the already heated political climate. Although Vestvolden was decommissioned in 1920, its military story wasn’t over. Vestvolden Voldpunkt 15 remained a military area, used for ammunition storage, well into the 1960s. Imagine the soldiers stationed here during World War I, part of a 50,000-strong force, waiting for a battle that never reached Danish shores. The echoes of their vigil seem to linger in the air. Even after the war, the military held onto sections of Vestvolden, with areas around Voldpunkt 15 finally vacated in 2004. Vestvolden Voldpunkt 15 stands as a reminder of a turbulent past, a blend of military might and political maneuvering. It’s a piece of history you can touch, a place where the past whispers its secrets.
