Insurance for workers. That sounds pretty dry, doesn’t it? But here at the Versicherungsanstalt Baden Plaque, we’re remembering a vital piece of social history.
This plaque commemorates the Landesversicherungsanstalt. The LVA provided statutory pension insurance for workers. Now, it operates as Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
Let’s step back in time. The LVA started at Kaiserallee 8 around 1890. Today, city of Karlsruhe authorities occupy that building. Among them are the Citizens’ Service and Security.
For over a century, the LVA operated independently in Baden. The LVA Württemberg operated in Stuttgart. In 2001, they merged. This formed the LVA Baden-Württemberg. Karlsruhe became the main headquarters with a branch in Stuttgart.
Until the end of 2004, the LVA served as the statutory pension insurance provider for workers. This was unlike the BfA. The BfA was only responsible for employees.
Since October 1, 2005, it has operated under the name Deutsche Rentenversicherung Baden-Württemberg.
Since August 1, 2007, it also took over the advice network of the former BfA. That is why their advice center at Europaplatz belonged to Deutsche Rentenversicherung Baden-Württemberg. It is now closed.
Did you know the LVA high-rise is Karlsruhe’s tallest? It reaches 77 meters high. Erich Schelling designed it between 1960 and 1964. Behind it is an extension also by Schelling. It was built in 1976.
Even the underground parking garage has a story. In March 2008, they closed it due to structural damage. Seeping condensation caused the issues. After the closure, they rebuilt it. The building’s visitor entrance moved completely to Gartenstraße.
The last address of the Versicherungsanstalt Baden was Gartenstraße 105. The postal code was 76135 Karlsruhe.
