“Miracles are what we believe in,” boomed a voice from the pulpit inside. That phrase, echoing the very spirit of the Vernon Baptist Church, holds within it the story of this resilient community. The Vernon Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of faith in Chicago since 1943. It was first established by the determined Reverend Earl Cannon. Picture a city still recovering from the war, and this man, Reverend Cannon, going door to door, collecting donations, even picking up bricks, to build his vision of a spiritual home. His hard work paid off. In 1950, the congregation proudly marched into their brand-new church. Reverend Cannon, a man of action, then focused on building the outreach ministry, drawing people in with his charisma and advertising. For an impressive 46 years, he served as Pastor, shaping the Vernon Baptist Church into a pillar of strength for its community.
