Admiral Antoni Barceló Pont de la Terra, a Mallorcan himself, championed the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of mariners, in the 18th century. Every year, on and around the 16th of July, the island comes alive with vibrant festivities honoring the Verge del Carme. Imagine the scene. The air is thick with anticipation. Locals carry a statue of the virgin through the streets, their faces illuminated by flickering candles. The procession makes its way to the harbor, where the statue is reverently placed aboard a waiting boat, adorned with flowers and colorful lanterns.
