Sixty centimeters of danger. That’s the maximum length of the Hungarian meadow viper. This tiny venomous snake calls Budapest home. Specifically the Kiskunság and Hanság regions.

The Hungarian meadow viper Vipera ursinii rakosiensis is a unique subspecies. It’s critically endangered. In fact it’s the most endangered species in the entire Pannonian Basin.

Imagine a time when these vipers were common across the Great Hungarian Plain. Their numbers began to dwindle about 300 years ago. Intensive farming and water management destroyed their habitat. They were also hunted and illegally sold on the black market.

These small snakes have triangular heads. This is because of their venom glands. Their backs are light grey or straw-colored. They have dark zig-zag patterns. Circular patches of the same color are on their sides.

Don’t let their size fool you. Their venom is potent. Although usually not lethal to humans a bite can cause nausea and dizziness. More serious symptoms like vomiting require immediate medical attention.

The Hungarian meadow viper is diurnal. It’s most active during the day. Their diet consists of lizards and insects. From October to March they hibernate in underground burrows.

The CONVIPURSRAK project helped. It aimed to increase the viper’s habitat. It involved grassland reconstruction and releasing vipers. There was also a public awareness campaign.

Today the Hungarian meadow viper clings to survival. Their story is a cautionary tale. It reminds us of the importance of conservation. Their continued existence relies on our efforts. So next time you are in Budapest remember this tiny but mighty snake.
