“Saved by a woman!” That’s the chant echoing in my mind as we gather here at Vellenoweth Green. This isn’t just any park it is a testament to community spirit and one woman’s determination.

Vellenoweth Green offers breathtaking views of the beach. It also offers views of the Hauraki Gulf, and Rangitoto Island. It’s an ideal spot for picnics, and it has tennis and bowling clubs. But its story goes deeper than leisure.

Let’s journey back to the early 1880s. The River Plate Company had designs on this land. They planned to reclaim Vellenoweth Green, which was a public amenity. But Anna Vellenoweth stepped forward. She fearlessly led the opposition.

Imagine the scene Anna rallying the community. She fought to preserve what was rightfully theirs. Thanks to her efforts, the reserve’s water frontage was saved. She also secured land for a bowling green, a tennis court, and a croquet lawn. Vellenoweth Green became a reality because of her vision.

These four pretty little houses sit in a row overlooking Vellenoweth Green. The oldest was built in 1910 and was up for sale recently, along with its neighbours, for a total of $10 million.

Fast forward to today and Vellenoweth Green stands as a vibrant park in St. Heliers, Auckland. It is a place where people come to relax, play, and enjoy the stunning scenery. The park is also a dedicated dog exercise area. Many Aucklanders bring their dogs to run around.

As you wander through Vellenoweth Green, take a moment to appreciate its history. Think about Anna Vellenoweth and her unwavering commitment. She saved this space for future generations. Her actions remind us of the power of community action and the importance of preserving our heritage.

So, as you enjoy your time here at Vellenoweth Green, remember that this beautiful space exists because one person dared to stand up and fight for what she believed in. A true Auckland hero.
