High above Dubrovnik, Velika Petka stands. Have you ever wondered about this protected park forest? It’s more than just a couple of hills. It’s a landmark with a history stretching back centuries.

Velika Petka and Mala Petka are the names of these hills. They rise above Dubrovnik offering stunning views. The hills follow a northwest to southeast direction. This is typical for the Dinaric Alps.

The geological base consists of Cretaceous sediments. You will also find limestones and dolomites. These rocks tell a story of ancient seas and geological events.

The dominant trees you see are Aleppo pines. These conifers create dense forests. In a few spots, you might spot Mediterranean cypress trees. These forests are home to many birds.

Velika Petka covers 43 hectares. It’s a strictly protected natural area. The main reason for protection is the Aleppo pine. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as an endangered species. Other rare plants also grow here. Morning glory is one example. The park provides refuge for many bird species too.

Dense thickets offer resting places for birds. Many songbird species live here. Thrushes, scythes and primroses are common. Chaffinches and goldfinches also spend the winter here. You are welcome to enter the park but some rules apply. Smoking and bonfires are prohibited. Camping is not allowed either.

Historical sources from the 13th century mention these hills. They were then called Mons Acutus meaning Ostre Gory. A temple dedicated to the goddess Venus once stood here. Later a church dedicated to Saint Petka was built on its ruins. The ruins were still visible in the 19th century. Today no trace of them remains.

Imagine this area centuries ago. Locals worshiping Venus. Then fast forward and picture a church dedicated to Saint Petka. Now, envision the forest park as it stands today. It is a haven for nature and a place for peaceful retreat.

You can reach Velika Petka easily. From Lapad head towards the coast. Follow Ulica Iva Dulčića. Then turn left onto Šetalište Nika i Meda Pucića. The park will be on your right. The walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Bus number 6 from Lapad is also an option. Get off at the Šetalište Nika i Meda Pucića bus stop. Renting a bicycle is another possibility.

Remember to wear comfortable shoes when visiting Velika Petka. Bring your camera for the stunning viewpoints. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best light. Perhaps pack a picnic to enjoy in the park.

Velika Petka offers more than just natural beauty. It provides panoramic views. It is a place to connect with nature. It’s a reminder of Dubrovnik’s rich history and natural heritage.
