Out where the land embraces the sea, lies Rt Smokvina. It is a place where the whispers of the Adriatic tell tales of Dubrovnik’s resilience. Let’s journey back through time. I will share stories of this remarkable city.
Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” boasts a history as deep and vibrant as the sea that surrounds it. Founded around 614 as Rausa, or Ragusium, by Roman refugees, Dubrovnik became a bridge between civilizations. It linked the East and West.
Imagine those early days. Slavs joined the Romans. Together, they built a city that would defy empires and stand the test of time. For centuries, Dubrovnik skillfully navigated the powers of Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The city preserved its freedom. It became a major trading hub. Dubrovnik traded with India and even recognized the United States in the late 18th century.
Think about the Republic’s values. In 1416, Dubrovnik banned slavery. The city considered it “shameful, wrong, and disgusting.” This was long before Britain and the United States took similar steps. Dubrovnik always stood for progress and liberty.
Consider the walls that embrace the old city. These walls tell their own story. They were built between the 12th and 17th centuries. The walls have never been breached by a hostile army. During the construction of the Minčeta Tower in 1464, there was a shortage of local building materials. The authorities ordered everyone arriving at the city to bring a stone.
The city suffered a devastating earthquake in 1667. It destroyed parts of the city. As many as 5,000 residents died. Despite this, Dubrovnik rose again. It rebuilt and continued to flourish. From 1800 to 1805, Dubrovnik secured a large share of the carrying trade. It was the only neutral Mediterranean state.
Even in recent history, Dubrovnik has shown its strength. During Croatia’s struggle for independence in 1991–92, the city suffered damage. Much of the old city has since been restored. Dubrovnik stands as a testament to perseverance.
As you stand at Rt Smokvina, feel the sea breeze. Remember the stories of Dubrovnik. Remember its resilience. It is a city that has overcome earthquakes and wars. Dubrovnik has always emerged stronger. The spirit of this “Pearl of the Adriatic” shines brighter than ever.
