Can you believe this place? This is the Veliefendi Hipodromu the largest and oldest horse racing track in Turkey. Right here in Istanbul it stands a testament to history and speed.

The Veliefendi Hipodromu wasn’t always a place of thrilling races. It began its life as a simple farm owned by the influential 18th-century religious leader Sheikh ul-Islam Veliyuddin Efendi. His land was the foundation for this amazing place.

Enver Pasha a powerful figure in the Ottoman Empire spearheaded its transformation. In 1912 and 1913 German engineers were brought in. They designed and built the track we see today. Think of the technology and planning that went into constructing such a large facility back then. This is more than just a race track.

The Veliefendi Hipodromu boasts three tracks. One is a grassy oval perfect for a classic horse race. There’s an all-weather synthetic track for any kind of weather. Finally there is a sandy oval for training. This variety ensures that races happen year-round.

Seating 7600 spectators the grandstands were rebuilt between 1967 and 1969. This impressive capacity shows the importance of horse racing to Turkey’s culture. The Veliefendi Hipodromu isn’t only about horses. It has hosted pop concerts too. Turkish singer Nez performed there in 2006. Imagine the atmosphere the music blending with the history of this place.

The Gazi Race one of Turkey’s most prestigious races has been held here since 1927. It’s a tribute to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The Prime Minister’s Race another big event has been a tradition since 1951. These races attract huge crowds and major purses.

But the Veliefendi Hipodromu’s history isn’t all smooth wins. In 1949 a race controversy erupted. Spectators angry over a perceived swindle set fire to parts of the track. Such intense passions surrounding the races really highlight their significance in Turkish culture. Even today the races spark intense emotions among fans.

Today the Veliefendi Hipodromu continues to thrive. It stands as a symbol of Turkey’s rich history passion for horse racing and its ability to blend tradition with modern entertainment. This grand venue is so much more than just a racetrack. It is an integral part of Istanbul’s vibrant identity.
