Want to discover a hidden gem nestled in Istanbul’s Mevlanakapi neighborhood? We are standing before the Veledi Karabaş Cami. It is a testament to Ottoman history and devotion. This mosque carries a story worth hearing.

The Veledi Karabaş Cami is also known as the Karabaş Mosque. Its origins trace back to the 17th century. Haci Mahmut Efendi commissioned it. He dedicated it to his own name. Haci Mahmut Efendi was the son of Sheikh Abdurrahman Efendi. Sheikh Abdurrahman Efendi founded the Karabaş Mosque in Hirkai Serif.

Though the exact construction date remains unknown, scholars estimate it to be around the second half of the 17th century. This estimation is based on the lifespan of its constructor. The Veledi Karabaş Cami stands as a tangible link to that era.

Observe the architecture. The mosque follows a rectangular plan. Its roof is a blend of wood and masonry. The walls consist of brick and rubble stone. The last congregation part shares the same roof. It features two exterior mihrabs. Inside, the ladies’ section, rostrum, and minbar are crafted from wood.

Notice the plain mihrab. It is made of gypsoplast. The minaret is not very high. It is plastered. Its cap is coated with lead. These simple details reflect the mosque’s humble origins and its enduring spirit.

Topal Ayse Hatun ordered the installation of the minbar. The mosque underwent renovations. Sadik Efendi was the first person to renovate it. Later, in 1903, II. Abdulhamit Han renovated it again. He extended it while preserving its originality.

The Veledi Karabaş Cami remains accessible today. Its location is on Aynali Bakkal Street. It provides a place for prayer and reflection. The mosque’s coordinates are 41.010565 latitude and 28.924226 longitude. Its postal code is 34104. Nearby landmarks include Veledi Karabaş Parki and Nişastahane Street.

As we conclude our visit to the Veledi Karabaş Cami remember its story. It represents faith. It embodies Ottoman heritage. It offers a tranquil escape in Istanbul. It connects us to the past.
