Legend says a builder promised to bury the first living thing he met after finishing the cemetery. Tragically it was his son. Now we stand before Vejlby Kirke. It is a testament to faith and history. This church has stood for centuries in Vejlby Parish near Aarhus.
Vejlby Kirke is not just a building. It is a landmark that connects us to Denmark’s past. Let’s journey back in time. We will uncover the layers of history within these ancient stones.
Originally Vejlby Kirke belonged to Aarhus Cathedral. Canons appointed priests until 1680. Then the church was annexed to the chaplain in the cathedral. In 1720, the state gave it to a merchant. The merchant’s family kept it until 1770. In 1784 Anders Rasmussen and Christian Faurschou bought Vejlby Kirke. Finally in 1911, it became independent. Vejlby Kirke had its own priest from 1811.
Look closely at the church’s architecture. The nave and choir are Romanesque. They were built in the 1100s. Boulders form the walls with ashlar around corners. Notice the windows and doors. Later the church was renovated in late medieval times. The Gothic tower and porch were added. Vaults appeared in the nave. Bishop Niels Clausen renovated Vejlby Kirke in 1492. Frescoes from that time decorate the church. Harald Borre uncovered and restored them in 1942.
Consider the details inside Vejlby Kirke. The renaissance pulpit dates to 1639. A mural shows Erasmus of Formia. The organ was built in the 1960s. There is also a walled-off northern door. Step inside and feel the weight of history. Imagine the countless prayers offered here. Think of the sermons preached.
Outside Vejlby Kirke, note the Romanesque gravestone. It is embedded in the porch wall. It is decorated with a cross sun moon and animal figures. The solid oak door dates to 1531. It features scroll-work and Jorgen Samsing’s coat of arms.
Vejlby Kirke’s altarpiece dates to the late 15th century. It was likely used in Aarhus Cathedral. The frescoes around us are from 1492.
Imagine life in Vejlby centuries ago. The church was the center of the community. It was a place of worship, gathering and solace. People came here for baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The church connected them.
Today Vejlby Kirke continues its legacy. It serves the Vejlby Parish. It welcomes all to experience its beauty and history. Take a moment to reflect. Think about the enduring power of faith. Consider the importance of community. Vejlby Kirke stands as a symbol of both.
