“Look at the detail in those plants!” the woman exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly in the Jardin des Plantes. What she was looking at wasn’t a living exhibit, but a stunning piece of art called Végétation exotique. Created in 1965 by Catherine-Anne Lurçat, the Végétation exotique relief captures the spirit of exotic flora in a unique and lasting way. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition against the living, breathing collection of the Jardin des Plantes. Established in 1635, this botanical garden was once a royal garden of medicinal plants. Today it sprawls across a vast 28 hectares, home to countless plant species, museums, and even a zoo – the second oldest in the world! But back to Végétation exotique. Its intricate details and the artist’s skillful hand bring a different dimension to the garden’s already impressive collection. It reminds us that art can be found not just within the walls of museums, but in the heart of nature itself.
