Established in 2013, Vega Ateistisk Gravplads at Vestre Cemetery offers a unique final resting place. It’s a place where those who don’t subscribe to religious beliefs can rest without the traditional symbols of faith. Vestre Cemetery itself is vast, spanning 54 hectares. It’s a veritable city of the deceased, with different sections dedicated to various faiths and nationalities. This diversity is reflected in designated areas for Muslims, Catholics, and even those from the Faroe Islands and Greenland. But Vega Ateistisk Gravplads stands apart. It caters specifically to atheists, a relatively recent addition to this historic cemetery. This section is a small part of the much larger Vestre Kirkeg\u00e5rd, which opened in 1870. The creation of Vega Ateistisk Gravplads was a direct response to a growing need for a secular burial option in Copenhagen. Before its establishment, atheists had limited choices for their final resting place. While the area is technically consecrated ground, like the rest of Vestre Cemetery, the absence of religious iconography at Vega Ateistisk Gravplads makes it a distinct and meaningful space. This small area allows those who identified as atheists in life to maintain that identity in death. The name “Vega,” a star in the constellation Lyra, reinforces the universal, non-denominational nature of this section. It symbolizes a connection to something larger than earthly religions, a shared human experience beyond specific doctrines.
