Why is that giant yellow sculpture so controversial? We are standing before the Vault Sculpture, affectionately nicknamed “The Yellow Peril” by some. Erected in 1980, this abstract behemoth, made of thick, flat steel polygons, was designed by artist Ron Robertson-Swann. Now, you might wonder why this seemingly simple structure caused such a stir. Imagine this: it’s 1980, and Melbourne’s City Square, a brand new public space, is unveiled with the Vault as its centerpiece. The public response was immediate and divided. Some praised its bold modernity, while others decried it as an eyesore, completely out of sync with the surrounding historical architecture. The cost, a hefty $70,000 in 1980, also drew criticism. Newspapers fueled the fire, dubbing it “The Yellow Peril,” a name that, despite its unfortunate connotations, somehow stuck. The controversy grew so heated that it became a factor in the Melbourne City Council’s dismissal by the State Government! After just three months in City Square, the Vault was banished to Batman Park, a less prominent location. It remained there for over two decades before finding its current home here at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 2002. Though once a symbol of controversy, the Vault Sculpture has, over time, become a beloved part of Melbourne’s urban fabric, a testament to the city’s evolving relationship with public art.
