Vaniköy Mosque is also known as Vani Mehmet Efendi Mosque. Vani Mehmet Efendi was a famous commentator. He preached among the ulema class. Köprülüzâde Fazıl Ahmed Pasha patronized him during Sultan Mehmet IV’s reign.
Sultan Mehmet IV gifted Vani Mehmet Efendi land near Üsküdar. It was then known as the Priest’s Garden or Grove. The district later became known as Vaniköy after him. Vani Mehmet Efendi essentially built the district. He constructed a mosque there in 1665 AD. He also built a mansion and madrasah for himself. The mosque and mansion still stand today.
Sadly on November 15 2020 a large fire struck Vaniköy Mosque. Much of the mosque was destroyed. Restoration work began after the fire. The mosque was rebuilt to match its original design. Workers meticulously preserved its historical features. This ensured it would remain open for worship.
