The scent of history hangs heavy in the air. This is Vaniköy Camii.

Vaniköy Camii stands proudly on the shores of the Bosphorus. It’s a historic Ottoman mosque. It’s also known as the Vanî Mehmed Efendi Camii. This name reflects its founder Vanî Mehmed Efendi. A significant religious figure during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV.

Vanî Mehmed Efendi wasn’t just any scholar. He was a renowned interpreter of the Quran. He was also one of the most famous calligraphers of his time. Sultan Mehmed IV gifted him a plot of land near Üsküdar. This land was known as the Papaz Bahçesi or Papaz Korusu. It is here that Vanî Mehmed Efendi built not just a mosque but a whole community. He created a medrese a school for religious study. He even constructed a mansion for his personal residence. The area became known as Vaniköy after him meaning “Van’s village”.

Vaniköy Camii’s construction began in 1665. The mosque and its accompanying structures endured centuries. However tragedy struck on November 15 2020. A devastating fire engulfed Vaniköy Camii. Much of its wooden structure was destroyed. The fire damaged precious collections of calligraphy and illumination within the mosque.

But this is not the end of Vaniköy Camii’s story. Following the fire restoration efforts began. The mosque was meticulously rebuilt. It was reconstructed to match its original design. This meticulous work aimed to preserve its historical and architectural features. The restoration project lasted approximately two and a half years. On June 16 2023 Vaniköy Camii reopened. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the reopening ceremony. The mosque is once again a place of worship and cultural activity.

Vaniköy Camii is not just a building. It is a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Istanbul. It stands as a symbol of a community’s dedication to preserving its heritage. The aroma of incense now mingles with the salty sea air. This is Vaniköy Camii a place where history faith and beauty meet.
