The colossal hangar doors beckon. They slide open revealing Vandflyverhangaren’s impressive interior. This isn’t just any hangar. It’s a testament to history ingenuity and modern design.

Vandflyverhangaren the Hydroplane Hangar on Margretheholm has witnessed a fascinating transformation. Originally built in 1921 by architect Christian Olrik it served as a vital workshop for the Danish Navy’s seaplanes. Imagine the bustling activity the whirring engines the smell of oil and metal. The Navy’s Airway Services maintained and repaired their hydroplanes here until 1950.

After the seaplanes departed the hangar adapted. It became an artillery school then a military workshop. Its enormous roof a stunning half-arch of early prestressed concrete supported the weight of its various functions. This unique architectural feature makes Vandflyverhangaren one of Denmark’s earliest large-span concrete constructions.

The Navy’s presence on Holmen eventually dwindled. By 1996 most operations had moved elsewhere. Vandflyverhangaren however found a new purpose. In 2001 Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter masterfully transformed it into a modern office building.

Today the soaring interior houses a unique workspace. Employees work on staggered decks suspended from white steel frames. Long white curtains offer privacy and flexibility. Even hammocks are available for midday naps a nod to the building’s past. The massive hangar doors remain. They open to reveal terraces and green spaces a modern contrast to the hangar’s industrial heritage.

Small details cleverly remind visitors of Vandflyverhangaren’s original function. There’s a water basin a subtle hint to its nautical past. Floor markings outside the main entrance echo the positioning of airplanes. The building’s transformation is a respectful blend of history and innovation. Vandflyverhangaren’s story is a testament to adaptation and the enduring power of design. It’s a place where history and modernity coexist. A place where the past whispers to the present.
