Validebag Wood isn’t just a pretty park. It boasts a rich history. Around two hundred years ago Mihrişah Valide Sultan Sultan Selim III’s mother planned a summer house here. After her death Sultan Abdülmecid gifted the land to his own mother Bezmialem Valide Sultan. She transformed it into a botanical garden. Plants arrived from all over Turkey and the world. Today you’ll find Atlas cedars Himalayan cedars coastal pines and many more species thriving in the grove.
The land didn’t always stay in the Sultan’s family. After Bezmialem’s death it went to the Altunizade family. Altunizade İsmail Zühtü Pasha built a magnificent mansion in 1860. Sultan Abdülaziz loved the mansion. He demolished it though and built a new hunting lodge. He then gave this to his mother Pertevniyal Valide Sultan. It eventually became a summer palace for Adile Sultan. This summer palace even starred in a famous Turkish movie The Class of Hababam. You can still see some of the original buildings. One now houses the Scout Museum.
More than just a historical site Validebag Wood is a haven for wildlife. Over 150 bird species call it home. You might spot laughing doves Eastern olivaceous warblers or even rarer raptors during migration. Squirrels and tortoises also share this green oasis. But be warned. Stray dogs are a problem here. Some visitors have felt unsafe.
Despite the stray dogs Validebag Wood remains a vital green space in a bustling city. It offers a peaceful retreat. It’s easy to explore. Numerous trails wind through ten hectares of forest. You can escape the city noise and feel like you’re in the countryside. It offers a glimpse into Istanbul’s past and a reminder of the beauty nature can bring even to the heart of a metropolis.
