Who could imagine art blossoming on a reservoir wall? The VAANA Peace Mural, splashed across the Watercare Reservoir at the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Roads, is more than just paint on concrete. It’s a vibrant testament to New Zealand’s staunch anti-nuclear stance. The VAANA Peace Mural began its life in 1985. This was a time when the world held its breath, fearing the mushroom cloud. New Zealand stood firm. A group known as Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms, or VAANA, decided to make their voices heard through art. They transformed a cold, functional wall into a canvas of peace. Initially, eight artists contributed their talents. These included artists like Margaret Lawlor-Bartlett, Pat Hanly, and Nigel Brown. Their panels declared New Zealand’s commitment to a nuclear-free world. Over time, the mural grew. More artists added their voices. The VAANA Peace Mural evolved into a powerful symbol of hope and resistance. In 2005, time and weather had taken their toll. The original mural was fading. But its message was too important to lose. So, the mural was reborn. It was digitally reproduced and printed on vinyl panels. New artists joined the original cohort, adding fresh perspectives in 2006 and again in 2009. Finally, in 2009, this collective artwork, this tapestry of peace, was officially gifted to the city of Auckland by the 22 participating artists. Today, the VAANA Peace Mural continues to resonate with locals and visitors alike. It stands as a bold reminder of New Zealand’s leadership in the global fight against nuclear weapons. It serves as a powerful symbol of peace in a world that still needs it.
