Utvrda Strinčjera

Overlooking the azure Adriatic, Utvrda Strinčjera stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of Dubrovnik’s tumultuous past. This fortress, whose name echoes the Italian word “trincera” meaning entrenchment, isn’t as famous as Dubrovnik’s city walls. But it holds a unique and compelling story. Utvrda Strinčjera is part of a larger defensive network. This network includes Fort Imperial, Gradci, and Delgorgue, all strategically placed on the slopes of Mount Srđ. Utvrda Strinčjera sits on a peak about 1300 meters northwest of Fort Imperial. Its position, at roughly 400 meters above sea level, commands a breathtaking view. From here, the entire northern, eastern, and part of the southeastern slopes of Mount Srđ are visible. This strategic vantage point explains why the Austrians chose this location. They built Utvrda Strinčjera to protect the approaches to Dubrovnik. The exact construction date remains a mystery. However, based on reports by Austrian Colonel Giuseppe Amerling in 1870, it’s believed to have been built between 1886 and the end of the 19th century. Interestingly, Colonel Amerling’s earlier reports on Dubrovnik’s fortifications make no mention of Utvrda Strinčjera. The fortress isn’t mentioned anywhere until 1886. During the Croatian War of Independence, Utvrda Strinčjera played a significant role. Initially, it served as a position for the Croatian Army. But after fierce fighting and the tragic deaths of ten Croatian defenders in November 1991, the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) seized the fortress. They held it until May 26, 1992. Today, Utvrda Strinčjera stands in ruins, overgrown with bushes and trees. The round defensive towers at its corners and the two structures within its walls are crumbling. However, the area around the fortress has been cleared of landmines. It has become a popular destination for hikers and tourists. A gravel road leads up to Utvrda Strinčjera from Fort Imperial. Scattered throughout the area, memorials honor the Croatian soldiers who lost their lives defending Dubrovnik. Utvrda Strinčjera serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice and the enduring spirit of this historic city.
