Across the expanse of Utterslev Mose, a symphony of birdsong fills the air. This isn’t just any park. Utterslev Mose, a sprawling 200-hectare oasis, holds a captivating blend of nature and history, right here in Copenhagen. Utterslev Mose was once a vast, shallow lake formed at the end of the last ice age. Over time, it transformed into the bogland we see today. This area played a crucial role in Copenhagen’s water supply from the 16th century until 1849. Imagine the city relying on this very spot for its lifeblood. Utterslev Mose even served as part of Copenhagen’s West Wall, a defensive line decommissioned in 1920. Between 1939 and 1943, Utterslev Mose underwent a remarkable transformation. Lakes were carved out, canals were created, and reed islands were strategically placed to provide nesting grounds for the abundant birdlife. The park’s rich biodiversity led to its protection in 2000. Today, Utterslev Mose boasts a network of trails winding through its diverse landscape. The three main lakes, Vestmosen, Midtmosen, and Østmosen, along with Højmosen in the northeast, offer a picturesque nine-kilometer circuit. Birdwatchers rejoice. Utterslev Mose is a haven for a wide variety of bird species. One of its most notable residents is the greylag goose. These normally shy creatures here stroll among visitors, even accepting bread from outstretched hands. Another remarkable bird is the black-headed gull, whose colony here was once among the largest in Europe. Although its numbers have declined, it remains a vital part of Utterslev Mose’s ecosystem. Utterslev Mose offers a serene escape from the city buzz, a testament to its rich history and the efforts to preserve its natural beauty.
