Step into the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. Feel the pulse of creativity. This isn’t just a museum it’s a living testament to artistic evolution. Founded in 1931 as the Art Barn Association the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art has a rich history. Alta Rawlins Jensen a true visionary dreamt of a space for art to thrive. Her dream became reality. In the 1930s the Art Barn supported Utah artists. It even published an art journal. The Art Barn gained recognition showcasing renowned artists including works by Vincent van Gogh.

In 1958 it became the Salt Lake Art Center reflecting its growing influence. Ten years later a new building was created. Edward Joe Ruben and FFKR Architects designed a modern space. The Salt Lake Art Center moved in 1979. It had more gallery space. A striking 24-foot stainless steel sculpture Column 24 was added. It stands between the museum and Abravanel Hall.

The name changed again in 2011. It officially became the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art UMOCA. The museum expanded its programs. UMOCA received funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation. It also received a National Endowment for the Arts grant. UMOCA partners with the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation. They present the Catherine Doctorow Prize. This prize is awarded to an emerging or mid-career artist. Past winners include notable figures like Firelei Báez Tala Madani and Kim Schoenstadt.

UMOCA is more than just exhibitions. It boasts six galleries. There’s a main gallery a street gallery even a Projects Gallery. The Projects Gallery showcases Utah artists.
