“This imposing structure before you. This is the University of Santo Tomas Main Building. Feel its presence.”

The University of Santo Tomas Main Building stands majestically. It is a testament to history and architectural brilliance. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living archive of centuries of education. It’s also a symbol of resilience. It withstood the ravages of war. It even survived the Second World War. The building served as the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. It housed American and other non-Filipino internees during the Japanese occupation.

Designed by the ingenious Fr Roque Ruaño. It was completed in 1927. It’s the first earthquake-resistant building in the Philippines. Fr Ruaño drew inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. This was particularly insightful given the Philippines’ location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The building is actually composed of 40 independent structures. These are connected by pre-cast stab flooring. This unique design is what gives the building its remarkable strength and stability. You can practically feel the history in the very stones.

Notice the statues on the fourth floor. These symbolize the university’s intellectual and spiritual aspirations. They were designed by the Italian sculptor Francesco Monti. They were installed between 1949 and 1953. They are truly magnificent works of art.

The building has seen its share of history. Popes Paul VI and John Paul II visited. Queen Sofia of Spain also graced its halls. In 1995 UST hosted World Youth Day with Pope John Paul II. The building has borne witness to countless milestones. It has witnessed countless triumphs and moments of academic excellence. It has also witnessed profound historical events. This place is a place of learning. It is also a place of great importance to the people of the Philippines.

As you stand here before the University of Santo Tomas Main Building. Remember that you are standing on hallowed ground. You are standing in a place where history lives and breathes. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Let its strength and resilience inspire you.
