However, the tides of war shifted, and the might of aircraft carriers eclipsed the dominance of battleships. Construction on the USS Illinois slowed, eventually halting altogether. The ship, incomplete and uncommissioned, was finally scrapped in 1958. The bell, however, found a home here in Chicago, a solemn tribute to a vessel that never had the chance to fulfill its destiny.
