Why did the Dukkancik Mosque in Üsküp gain the peculiar nickname, “Mosque of the Shopkeepers”? We stand before the remnants of this once vibrant mosque, now a poignant echo of its former glory. The Üsküp Camii, also known as the Dukkancik Mosque, rests in the heart of Üsküp. It stands near what is now the National Theatre and the Jane Sandanski Primary School. The Dukkancik Mosque whispers tales of a rich past. It speaks of a time when shopkeepers and artisans bustled in the nearby marketplace.

The mosque’s vakfiye, a detailed endowment deed dating back to 1549, unveils its origins. Mevlânâ Muslihuddin Abdülgani, a man of notable generosity, commissioned the Üsküp Camii. The vakfiye paints a portrait of his benevolence, revealing his numerous charitable works throughout the region. These include the Altun Alem Mosque and a school in Novi Pazar, a small prayer house in Trepča, and even a ribât, a fortified lodging for travelers. Interestingly, the vakfiye also mentions numerous shops. These shops, clustered near the mosque and in other parts of Üsküp, were part of the mosque’s endowment. Their rents supported not only the mosque but also other charitable institutions, giving a clue to the nickname “Dukkancik,” or “of the shopkeepers.”

The mosque’s architecture reflects a unique blend of Ottoman and Balkan styles. Its original design featured a grand single dome over the main prayer hall, a feature common in Ottoman mosques. What sets it apart, however, is the two-domed portico preceding the prayer hall. This two-domed portico is a rare architectural element in Balkan mosque design, echoed only in a few other mosques from the 16th century, such as the Bali Bey Mosque in Niš and, notably, Abdülgani’s own Altun Alem Mosque in Novi Pazar. The mosque’s minaret, a slender, polygonal tower, adhered to the traditional Balkan style. Its strategic placement at the intersection of the portico and the main prayer hall adds a distinctive touch. The construction materials, a blend of cut stone and brick, speak to the local resources and building techniques.

Sadly, the Üsküp Camii has weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. The Austrian occupation of 1869 left its mark, damaging the mosque, though it was later repaired. Traces of this repair work can be seen in the layers of floral motifs that adorn the interior walls. But the most devastating blow came in the form of the 1963 earthquake. This catastrophic event left the mosque in ruins, with only the western and northern walls and the resilient minaret still standing. Though slated for restoration in 1965, the mosque languished in neglect until 1992, when renewed attention brought hope for its revival.

Today, as we gaze upon the remaining fragments of the Üsküp Camii, we can almost hear the echoes of the shopkeepers and worshippers who once filled its spaces. Though much of its physical form is lost, its story persists, a testament to a man’s generosity and a city’s vibrant past.
