This plaque commemorates the Ursuline Academy of Dallas, a school that has played an important role in the city’s educational landscape for more than a century. It was designated by the Texas Historical Commission as a historical landmark back in 1989. The inscription on the plaque tells us that the Ursuline Sisters, a group of dedicated nuns, came to Dallas in 1874, answering a call from Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis. They had a big dream for this city. In the early days, the academy was a tiny, four-room cottage right near Sacred Heart Church in downtown Dallas. The sisters worked tirelessly, guiding and inspiring the minds of the city’s young girls. As the academy grew, the sisters moved to a larger building on Bryan, Haskell, and Live Oak streets. Years later, in 1949, the academy found its home on this site.
