“Imagine a tale of forbidden love and tragic betrayal frozen in bronze.” That’s the essence of the Nuredduna Statue. Today I will tell you her story.
The Nuredduna Statue stands near the Palacio de Congresos in Palma. She gazes longingly out to sea. The statue is the work of Remigia Caubet González.
Nuredduna’s story comes from a poem by Miquel Costa i Llobera. The poem is called ‘La lascia del geni grec’ or ‘The Legacy of Greek Genius.’ It was written in 1900 and later became an opera.
The legend says that Nuredduna was the granddaughter of a Talayotic tribal chief. Her village was Ses Païsses in Artà. She fell deeply in love with a Greek soldier. His name was Melesigeni.
Melesigeni sang and played his lyre. He and eight other soldiers were about to be sacrificed to the gods. Nuredduna helped him escape to the Caves of Artà. In his hurry, he forgot his lyre.
Melesigeni returned to his ship. He then attacked Ses Païsses. Nuredduna’s betrayal was discovered. Her family sentenced her to death by stoning.
Mortally wounded, she sought refuge in the caves of Artà. She died there. Now, Nuredduna waits at the shore. She hopes that Melesigeni will return one day.
The statue captures this tragic moment. Nuredduna holds a lyre. Her expression is full of longing. She is forever waiting for her lost love.
Ses Païsses, Nuredduna’s village, is one of the largest and best-preserved Talayotic villages in Mallorca. The village reminds us of the ancient history of this island. It is a place where history and legend intertwine.
