High above Rio de Janeiro’s bustling streets sits Morro da Urca. A smaller hill than its famous neighbor Sugarloaf Mountain it offers a unique perspective. Morro da Urca is more than just a hill. It’s a historical landmark. It’s also a gateway to the breathtaking views of Sugarloaf.

The first Portuguese settlement in Rio was established near the base of Morro da Urca in 1565. This area was strategically important. It guarded the entrance to Guanabara Bay. Morro da Urca served as a vital signaling point. The Urca neighborhood itself however developed much later around 1920. The name Urca might even be older. Some historians believe it was already on 18th century maps. It refers to types of cargo ships.

The area’s development was influenced by the construction of a casino in the 1920s. This casino was a vibrant hub for Rio’s social scene. The famous Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda was discovered there in 1938. The casino also played an unexpected role in astrophysics. Two scientists coined a term inspired by the rapid disappearance of money at the roulette table. This term described the rapid energy loss from a cooling star. The casino unfortunately closed in 1946. It was later used by TV Tupi a pioneer in Brazilian television.

Today Morro da Urca offers more than just history. Hikers can enjoy a relatively easy trail through the Atlantic rainforest. Monkeys inhabit this lush forest. There are viewpoints offering stunning views. You can see Guanabara Bay Botafogo and even Copacabana and Ipanema. The trail leads to the base of the Sugarloaf cable car. You can either hike back down or continue your ascent to Sugarloaf. Morro da Urca is an easy but rewarding hike. It gives you a taste of Rio’s natural beauty and rich history. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. The views from the summit are unforgettable. Remember to keep a close eye out for those playful monkeys!
