Imagine this: a tranquil oasis embraced by lush greenery. This is Upper Seletar Reservoir Park. It is a haven far removed from Singapore’s urban hustle.

Upper Seletar Reservoir Park offers more than just scenic beauty. It is steeped in history. It is also a vital part of Singapore’s water infrastructure. Once known simply as Seletar Reservoir, it gained the “Upper” moniker in 1992. This was after the completion of the Lower Seletar Reservoir.

Back in the early 20th century, Singapore faced a surge in water demand. The Seletar Reservoir was built to address this need. Construction began under Municipal Water Engineer D. J. Murnane. His deputy, F. G. Hill, oversaw the work. The reservoir was completed in 1940. Princess Alexandra officially opened it on August 10, 1969.

Today, Upper Seletar Reservoir Park spans 15 hectares. It is a popular spot for recreation. Joggers, walkers, and fishing enthusiasts flock here. The park also boasts a viewing tower. This offers panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding landscape.

The Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and Mandai Orchid Garden sit near the Upper Seletar Reservoir. This makes the area a hub for nature and wildlife.

Some say crocodiles inhabit the reservoir. There is no concrete evidence. But “Beware of Crocodile” signs add a touch of intrigue.

In 1967, the Public Utilities Board began expansion work. The goal was to increase the reservoir’s capacity. They wanted to meet Singapore’s growing water needs. They also built a 60-foot-tall glass-encased viewing tower. This encouraged recreational use.

As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate Upper Seletar Reservoir Park. It is more than just a park. It is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to water management. It is also a place where nature and recreation intertwine. A place where you can escape the city. A place where you can connect with the environment.
