Envision a tranquil oasis nestled amidst the lush Waitākere Ranges. This is the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir, a vital source of life for Auckland. The Upper Nihotupu Reservoir, completed in 1923, stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the delicate balance between nature and progress. This concrete gravity dam, along with four others in the Waitākere Ranges, quenches the thirst of New Zealand’s largest city. The reservoir holds a staggering 2.2 million cubic meters of water within its 12.5-hectare expanse. Before the dam’s construction, the Nihotupu area, including the breathtaking Nihotupu Falls, was a popular tourist destination in the late 19th century. The story of the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir is not without its trials. The construction, starting in 1915, was fraught with challenges. Heavy rainfall and flooding plagued the site, and World War I strained resources and labor. Tragedy struck during the construction of a tramline to the site. A stray rock, propelled by blasting, flew 100 meters into the site office, tragically killing contractor William Langlands. Despite these setbacks, the dam was finally completed in 1923. The very tramline that witnessed tragedy later became a part of a tourist attraction, the Rainforest Express. Visitors could journey along the tracks, marveling at the rainforest scenery and concluding their trip at the majestic dam. Sadly, the tramline, along with the Waitakere Tramline, closed in 2014 after geological reports revealed unstable sections along the route. Today, the Upper Nihotupu Reservoir remains an essential resource for Auckland. Its story is a blend of human endeavor, natural beauty, and a touch of melancholy. The Upper Nihotupu Reservoir stands as a symbol of resilience, whispering tales of the past amidst the serene beauty of the Waitākere Ranges.
