Whispers of faith echo through the years here at Upper Holloway Baptist Church. This church has been a cornerstone of the North London community for over 150 years. Upper Holloway Baptist Church first opened its doors in 1868. It was founded by 72 devoted members. This church wasn’t just any Baptist church. It held the distinction of being the first church built by the newly formed London Baptist Association. This association had a key mission: to promote new church buildings across London. The location in Upper Holloway was strategically chosen in 1866. The area was experiencing rapid housing development. It was seen as ripe for spiritual growth. Members of Camden Road Baptist Church and other local churches rallied together to support the foundation of Upper Holloway Baptist Church. The church quickly blossomed into a prominent force in North London. It became one of the largest Baptist churches in the city, boasting a seating capacity of 1200 and a membership exceeding 950. Upper Holloway Baptist Church played a vital role in the religious, political, and social fabric of the community. It extended its reach through several mission stations, including Rupert Road Mission Hall and Hercules Road Mission. Interestingly, the church earned a local nickname, “Woods’s Chapel”. This was a tribute to one of its long-serving ministers, John Roskruge Wood, who led the congregation from 1874 to 1912. The church’s historical records, spanning from 1867 to 1982, are a treasure trove of information. They detail the diverse activities within the church, from committee meetings to Sunday school gatherings. Sadly, the original church building was demolished in 1989. However, from the ashes of the old arose a new development on the same site. This new development thoughtfully incorporates accommodation for the elderly and a brand-new church building, ensuring that the legacy of Upper Holloway Baptist Church continues to serve the community. The church is currently led by Reverend Hanna Sintim. Her passion is to see lives transformed by the power of faith. She feels a strong calling to reach out to those in need across North London. Upper Holloway Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
