University of the East – Ramon Magsaysay

Established in 1956, the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC) stands as a testament to education and philanthropy. The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay was the first philanthropic institution in the Philippines. It was named in honor of the late President Ramon Magsaysay. This university, often called UERM, isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living monument to a man who championed the people, and a symbol of the nation’s commitment to healthcare and education. The UERMMMC isn’t just a single entity. It encompasses a College of Medicine, recognized as a Center of Excellence in Research. This college also holds a Level IV accreditation from PAASCU. This is a distinction held by no other private medical school. The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay has a rich history of innovation in medical education. They pioneered the Correlated Lecture Series. They championed the use of problem-oriented medical records and integrated family planning into their curriculum. UERMMMC also established a clinical clerkship program in the USA and a grant-in-aid scholarship program. They constantly review and upgrade their curriculum, integrating primary health care and implementing core curriculum changes. The UERMMMC is also home to the UERM Memorial Hospital. This hospital has been serving the community since 1957. It offers a wide range of specialties, from psychiatry and neurosurgery to ophthalmology and rehabilitation medicine. It also boasts a state-of-the-art Endoscopy Unit. In a remarkable feat of medical innovation, UERM neurosurgeon Elmer Jose Meceda performed the Philippines’ first successful endoscopic sacral metastatic tumor surgery right here. This groundbreaking procedure, done in 2024, involved removing a 5 cm malignant tumor from the base of a patient’s spine using minimally invasive techniques. The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay continues to uphold its legacy of achievement. In 2019, UERM achieved a 98.65% passing rate on the Physician Licensure Examination. This impressive result earned them the title of third top performing medical school in the country.
