Fashion dreams materialize here. We stand before Central Saint Martins. It is a constituent college of the University of the Arts London. This public art university is in the heart of London. Central Saint Martins offers full-time courses. These range from foundation to postgraduate levels. They also provide short and summer courses.
Central Saint Martins has a rich history. It was formed in 1989. This happened from the merger of two esteemed schools. These were the Central School of Art and Design. It was founded in 1896. The other one was Saint Martin’s School of Art. It was established much earlier in 1854.
Let’s step back in time. The Central School of Art and Design emerged from the Arts and Crafts movement. William Richard Lethaby was its first principal. He served from 1896 to 1911. The school initially resided in Morley Hall. Later, in 1908, it moved to a purpose-built building. It was in Southampton Row.
Saint Martin’s School of Art had its roots in the church. Henry Mackenzie founded it in 1854. He was the vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields. By 1859, it gained independence from the church. Frank Martin’s arrival in 1952 changed everything. He revitalized the sculpture department. Anthony Caro was among the influential teachers he brought in.
In 1999, the Drama Centre London joined Central Saint Martins. It was founded in 1963. It maintained its unique teaching approaches. The Byam Shaw School of Art merged in 2003. It was originally a school of drawing and painting.
Central Saint Martins moved to King’s Cross in 2011. It now occupies a converted warehouse complex on Granary Square. The Granary Building is its main site. However, it also uses buildings in Archway and Holborn.
The college is organized into nine programs. These cover a wide range of disciplines. Acting, art, design and fashion are included. Graphics, jewelry and textiles are also offered. Foundation courses are available too.
Central Saint Martins has received accolades. In 1998, it won a Queen’s Anniversary Prize. This was for its contribution to the fashion industry. The University of the Arts London received another in 2013. This recognized CSM’s impact on commerce and design.
Many famous alumni have walked these halls. Laure Prouvost won the Turner Prize. Jarvis Cocker is a celebrated musician. Fashion designers like John Galliano and Stella McCartney are alumni. Alexander McQueen and Riccardo Tisci also studied here.
In 2022, Rathna Ramanathan became the head of the college. She succeeded Jeremy Till. He had held the position since 2012.
