Established in 1883 the University of Texas at Austin stands proudly before you. Its history is rich and layered a tapestry woven with ambition and struggle triumph and tragedy. Imagine the original campus a single building on College Hill. That building Old Main served every purpose. It stood where the iconic Main Building and its towering 307-foot clock tower now rise.

The university’s early years were not without challenges. Funding was scarce. The Civil War delayed promised funds. The university’s motto Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis Education is the Guardian of the State reflects its founding principles. It connected education to the prosperity of Texas. This commitment is visible in the numerous alumni who have served in government. Think of Sam Rayburn the longest-serving Speaker of the House.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1923. Oil was discovered on university-owned land. The Santa Rita No 1 well gushed forth. This unexpected wealth fueled an era of expansion. The Beaux-Arts Main Building and its majestic tower became centerpieces of the growing campus.

The university’s journey has not been without its darker chapters. The 1966 tower shooting remains a somber reminder of a tragic day. The observation deck was closed for years. It eventually reopened after security enhancements. A turtle pond now serves as a memorial near the tower.

Integration was a long and arduous process. Heman Sweatt’s lawsuit Sweatt v Painter paved the way for the university’s desegregation. The first Black students entered in 1956. Full integration of facilities came later in 1965. The university’s commitment to diversity continues to evolve.
