On a dusty, undeveloped plot of land in 1880, a dream took root. This dream, the University of Southern California, opened its doors to a mere 53 students and 10 teachers. Los Angeles was a world away from the bustling metropolis we know today. No paved streets, no electric lights, no telephones, and certainly no reliable fire alarm system. Yet, amidst this rugged landscape, the University of Southern California began its journey. The University of Southern California’s story is a testament to the vision of Judge Robert Maclay Widney and the generosity of three prominent Angelenos. Ozro W. Childs, a Protestant horticulturist, John G. Downey, an Irish-Catholic pharmacist and businessman, and Isaias W. Hellman, a German-Jewish banker and philanthropist, donated 308 lots of land. This land became the foundation of the University Park Campus. It also provided the initial endowment, ensuring the university’s financial future. From these humble beginnings, the University of Southern California has blossomed into a global academic powerhouse. Today, the University of Southern California is home to more than 48,000 students and over 4,400 full-time faculty. The University of Southern California has a rich Olympic heritage. The first USC student to compete in the Olympic Games was Emil Breitkreutz in 1904. Since then, the University of Southern California has produced more Olympians, medalists, and gold medalists than any other university in the United States. The university’s history is woven into the fabric of the campus itself. The site of the first football field, the echoes of World War II’s impact on campus life, all whisper stories of the past. Twelve presidents have guided the University of Southern California through its remarkable evolution. From a small college to a world-renowned institution, the University of Southern California continues to draw students from across the globe. As you stand here, at the heart of this vibrant campus, imagine the transformation. From dirt roads to a thriving academic center, the University of Southern California’s story is one of vision, perseverance, and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge.
