Established on March 7, 1946, the University of Santo Tomas Hospital stands as a beacon of healing and education. The University of Santo Tomas Hospital wasn’t the university’s first foray into healthcare. A royal decree in 1875 designated the San Juan de Dios Hospital, founded in 1577, as the university’s teaching hospital. This partnership forged a legacy of medical instruction. World War II brought devastation. The original hospital and campus were destroyed in the Liberation of Manila in 1945. From the ashes, a new facility arose on España Boulevard using supplies from the US Army and a loan from Elizalde and Company. The charity unit opened its doors on February 15, 1945, providing much-needed care to those in need. The University of Santo Tomas Hospital is more than just a place for treatment. It’s a teaching hospital, nurturing future generations of healthcare professionals. It has a private division and a clinical division serving indigent patients. The private division helps to subsidize the clinical division. This dual nature allows the hospital to uphold its commitment to both medical advancement and compassionate care. In 1984, the University of Santo Tomas Hospital became a pioneer in the Philippines by offering genetic counseling through its prenatal diagnostic clinic. Three years later, they opened a pediatric intensive care unit, further solidifying their commitment to specialized care. Even during challenging times, like the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Santo Tomas Hospital persevered. Despite financial difficulties due to unpaid claims and underpayments, the hospital continues its mission of healing and teaching. They deferred planned staff retrenchment, demonstrating their dedication to their staff and the community. The University of Santo Tomas Hospital stands as a testament to resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to serving the community.
