Consider this: the Edinburgh Futures Institute tackles some of the world’s most complex problems. It resides in the former Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Lauriston Place. The Edinburgh Futures Institute or EFI opened its doors in 2022. It stands on the southern edge of Edinburgh’s Old Town.
Now, let’s delve into its history. Until 2003, this building served as a hospital. It was part of the National Health Service. In 1998, the hospital moved to a modern campus. This new location was in the Little France area. The university then purchased the remaining Royal Infirmary site in 2016. It had been empty since 2003. Surgical services had moved to the new Royal Infirmary.
The Edinburgh Futures Institute is part of a major initiative. In 2018, the university partnered with the UK and Scottish governments. They signed the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal. The EFI became one of five innovation hubs. Its mission was to tackle major global challenges.
An anonymous donor gifted the university a substantial sum in 2017. It was £10 million. This donation supported the renovation of the Royal Infirmary.
