Consider the legacy that began with a South Carolina surgeon’s ambition. That vision evolved into the University of California, San Francisco. UCSF stands as a beacon of health science and life science. It shapes the future of medicine.

UCSF’s story began in 1864. Hugh Toland founded Toland Medical College. He sought to create a center for medical education in San Francisco. In 1873, it affiliated with the University of California. It became the Medical Department of the University of California. That same year, the California College of Pharmacy joined. A dentistry school followed in 1881.

Initially, facilities scattered across Berkeley and San Francisco. In 1964, UCSF gained full administrative independence. It became a distinct campus within the UC system. This event highlighted the need for UCSF to have its own hospital.

In response, preclinical instruction moved to Berkeley. Space was made for a teaching hospital at Parnassus Heights. By 1907, an outpatient clinic and a teaching hospital were operational. This led to the establishment of the UC Training School for Nurses.
