The University of Asia and the Pacific or UA&P began as the Center for Research and Communication CRC in 1967. Jesus P Estanislao and Bernardo M Villegas founded it. They envisioned a private think tank for economic and social research.

Initially CRC provided economic training programs. It advised private sector businesses. The CRC’s first office was at the United Coconut Authority. Later it moved to Jorge Bocobo Street in Malate Manila.

In 1970 Msgr Josemaría Escrivá encouraged expansion. He met with the founders in Mexico. This meeting inspired the first graduate program. It was a Masters in Industrial Economics.

CRC moved to its current campus in Ortigas Center Pasig in 1982. Formal and informal programs were established. The Center for Food and Agribusiness was established a year later. In 1987 Bishop Álvaro del Portillo suggested establishing a university.

The Institute of Development Education was the foundation. It became the School of Education. In 1995 the Commission on Higher Education approved university status. The Center for Research and Communication continued its consultancy work. It became the Center for Research and Communication Foundation Inc.

On March 19 1989 the UA&P College of Arts and Sciences was established. It admitted 158 students. University status was gained on June 26 1995. Dr Estanislao became the first University President. Fr Ramon Lopez became Vice Grand Chancellor.

The University of Asia and the Pacific has a rich history. It grew from a small research center. Now it offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The Ortigas campus has five buildings. These include the Administration Library Building and the College of Arts and Sciences. There is also the Development Communications Building. The APEC Communications Building is used for many purposes. Finally there is the Parking and Sports Building.

The University of Asia and the Pacific offers 19 undergraduate degrees. It also offers 13 stand alone graduate degrees. Fast track programs are available. These include a five year program and a six year integrated program.

A Student Mentoring Program is a key part of the education. It focuses on holistic development. Students receive personal advising. This helps them integrate their learning.

Student Development Programs offer activities. These include Organizations and Leadership Kultura and Civics. Sports are seen as character development.

The University of Asia and the Pacific competes in sports. It participates in the MNCAA and WNCAA. Teams include basketball futsal and volleyball.

Many student organizations are available. These cater to various interests. The Office of Student Affairs holds the Civitas Asia youth conference. Virtus is the UA&P Competition League.

Since 1995 the Center for Research and Communication has continued. It provides consultancy work. This work focuses on business economics and international relations. It also focuses on education and food.

Notable alumni include David T Leechiu and Kevin L Tan. Also included are John Eric T Francia and Justin C Ongsue. The University of Asia and the Pacific has shaped many leaders.
