University of Applied Sciences Bremen

In 1894, a seed was planted in Bremen, a seed that would grow into the University of Applied Sciences Bremen. It began as the Technikum, a school focused on building trades and shipping. Imagine those first 105 students, their hopes pinned on this new institution. The University of Applied Sciences Bremen wasn’t always the sprawling entity it is today. Its first home was on Langemarckstraße, a building erected between 1892 and 1894. The University of Applied Sciences Bremen expanded rapidly. In 1895, the Seemaschinistenschule, a school for ship engine operations, joined the fold. That same year, schools for mechanical engineering and shipbuilding also became part of the growing institution. By 1906, the University of Applied Sciences Bremen had outgrown its original location and moved across the street to what is now known as the M-building. Interestingly, the old building on Langemarckstraße played a role in World War I, serving as a military hospital. Later it became council offices. Eventually, it returned to its academic roots. The University of Applied Sciences Bremen, needing more space, reclaimed the building. Today, it houses the International Graduate Center. In 1982, a significant transformation occurred. Four separate applied sciences universities in Bremen merged, solidifying the University of Applied Sciences Bremen as we know it. This merger brought together diverse disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration that continues to shape its character. The University of Applied Sciences Bremen has come a long way from those initial 105 students. Today, nearly 8,700 students pursue degrees in engineering, economics, and social sciences. This growth reflects not only the university’s success but also the increasing importance of applied sciences in Germany and beyond.
