In 1903, a beacon of knowledge arose in Seattle’s University District. This beacon was the University Heights Elementary School, now known as the University Heights Community Center. The building stands proudly at the intersection of University Way and 50th Street. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of the community for over a century. The University Heights Community Center isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the community’s resilience and dedication to education and growth.

The school opened its doors to eager children in 1903. Decades later, in 1988, the Seattle School District proposed its closure. Imagine the heartbreak of the community! Parents, students, staff, and supporters rallied. They formed a human chain around the beloved building, chanting, “Be cool, save our school!” Despite their efforts and a lawsuit, the school closed in 1989. But this wasn’t the end of the story. This was a new beginning.

The community refused to let this historic landmark fade away. Driven by passion and a shared vision, they reopened the building as the University Heights Community Center in 1990. The spirit of learning and growth continued within its walls. Today, the University Heights Community Center serves over 130,000 people annually. The center offers a diverse array of programs, workshops, and events. It hosts long-term tenants like the University District Farmer’s Market, Northwest Choirs, and Broadway Bound Children’s Theatre. From children’s music classes to martial arts courses, there’s something for everyone.

The building itself is a blend of architectural styles. The original design by Bebb and Mendel features a distinctive curving parapet, hinting at the Mission Revival style popular in California at the time. Constructed with wood, the building stands as a unique Seattle adaptation. Over the years, the building has undergone renovations. A notable restoration of the windows in 2011 earned the organization a preservation award from Historic Seattle. A p-patch, a community garden, was established in 1991, adding a touch of green to the urban landscape.

Some even whisper that the University Heights Community Center is haunted. These rumors add an extra layer of intrigue to the building’s rich history. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, the University Heights Community Center is undoubtedly a place filled with stories and memories. As you stand before this historic building, take a moment to appreciate its journey. It’s a journey from elementary school to community hub, a testament to the power of community and the enduring value of “Old Schools.”
