Université Sorbonne Paris Nord – Villetaneuse

Have you ever heard of a university changing its name multiple times? Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord has done just that. Located in Villetaneuse, just north of Paris, it’s had quite the identity crisis over the years. Originally part of the famed University of Paris, founded way back in 1253, Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord gained its independence in 1970 thanks to the Faure reform. This reform shattered the old university into thirteen separate institutions. Our university became Universit\u00e9 Paris XIII. Not exactly the most glamorous name, is it? Over the decades, it also went by Universit\u00e9 Paris-Nord, Universit\u00e9 Paris 13 Paris Nord, and simply Universit\u00e9 Paris 13. Finally, in 2020, it embraced its current name: Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord. This new name acknowledges its prestigious Parisian heritage while emphasizing its location. The university boasts over 25,000 students and almost 1000 academic staff. It’s a major player in French education and research. Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord isn’t confined to just one location. It sprawls across five campuses in Seine-Saint-Denis and Val d’Oise. You’ll find parts of it in Villetaneuse, Bobigny, Saint-Denis, La Plaine Saint-Denis, and even Argenteuil. The main campus here in Villetaneuse is the historical heart. It houses most of the students and research units. The campus received significant investment in 2010 with improved transportation and a new train station, Gare de Villetaneuse-Universit\u00e9. They even added a shiny new library in 2016. Did you know the IUT at Villetaneuse contains a cutting-edge cleanroom dedicated to nanotechnology? Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord offers a wide range of subjects. From health, medicine, and human biology to letters, languages, and humanities, there’s something for everyone. Law, political and social sciences, communication, economics, and management are also on the menu. Imagine starting university here in the early 1970s. The first building on the Villetaneuse campus was completed in 1970. The initial 1500 students started their studies in law, economics, and humanities in December of that year. The library wasn’t ready until 1972. Universit\u00e9 Sorbonne Paris Nord stands as a testament to the evolution of French higher education. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine.
