The Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille has a rich history rooted in the exploration of the seas. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century. Antoine-Fortuné Marion founded the Station de Zoologique d’Endoume in 1889. He was a professor at the Faculté des Sciences de Marseille. The station’s mission was to study the marine life of the Gulf of Marseille. It had direct access to the sea.
In 1933, it evolved into the Station Marine d’Endoume. Then in 1982, it merged into the Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille. This center was part of the Université de la Méditerranée. Later known as Aix-Marseille 2. By 2012, it transformed into the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography. It then moved to the Luminy University Campus in Marseille.
The research conducted here is recognized by the scientific community. It covers all themes related to marine science. Since 1966, ocean study has been inseparable from resource exploitation. Jean-Marie Pérès coined the term “oceanology” in 1966. It describes human activities from oceanographic knowledge and use.
