On Rue Chape stands a building steeped in history. It’s a story of compassion and healing. This unassuming street holds the legacy of the Clinique Sainte Elisabeth.

Initially founded in 1894 it was a haven for impoverished women. These women suffered from severe wounds or cancer. They found refuge here when hospitals refused them admission. The clinic’s mission was to provide care and comfort. It was a testament to the community’s dedication to the vulnerable. It became officially recognized as a public utility in 1928.

In 1947 the hospice transformed into a specialized medical clinic. It was placed under the patronage of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. A remarkable woman herself she was a Franciscan tertiary and a saint of the Catholic Church. The clinic continued to evolve. In 1957 it became a medical health center. A social security agreement followed in 1967. Significant construction projects took place on the grounds near Rue Monte-Cristo in 1998-1999.

In 2005 a major renovation took place. The goal was to improve the palliative care unit. A designer aimed to create a comforting atmosphere. He wanted to foster open communication. This meant bringing in more natural light and redesigning the interior layout. It was a project to bring comfort to those in their final days.

Today the Association de l’Œuvre du Calvaire de Marseille keeps the spirit of the original charter alive. The association’s focus is to welcome and care for those in need. It cares for them without discrimination. This is a legacy of compassion that started on Rue Chape. The Association now manages the Clinique Sainte Elisabeth as an ESPIC. It also runs a specialized residence for severely polyhandicapped adults. The quiet street bears witness to a long history of healing and hope. It stands as a silent testament to the enduring spirit of compassion in Marseille.
