Five million volumes. That’s a lot of stories. Right here before us stands the Universit\u00e4tsbibliothek der LMU M\u00fcnchen. It holds within its walls not just books but centuries of history.
The Universit\u00e4tsbibliothek der LMU M\u00fcnchen is the heart of the Ludwig Maximilian University’s knowledge. Its collection is immense. It’s one of Germany’s largest university library systems. Think about that for a moment. Millions of stories waiting to be discovered.
Our library’s journey began long ago in Ingolstadt. Founded in 1473 it remained there for three centuries. Then Elector Maximilian IV Joseph moved the university to Landshut in 1800. The secularization of 1802/1803 brought a flood of books. Suddenly the Landshut university library became the third largest in Germany. Only G\u00f6ttingen and Breslau were bigger.
In 1826 the library moved to Munich. By 1925 it was one of Germany’s largest libraries. It held 831.000 volumes. But World War I brought hardship. Space became a huge problem. Then came World War II. Allied bombings devastated Munich. Ninety percent of the library building was destroyed. At least one third of its collection was lost.
After the war the library worked in temporary locations. This was impractical. Finally in 1967 a new building was constructed. The library continued to grow. It developed special collections. These included manuscripts and incunabula. The library also embraced technology. It became a pioneer. It was the first in Bavaria to have a CIP-pool with networked PCs. Students from six faculties used it. It was also the first university library on the continent to offer ebooks. By 2010 it had even digitized its most valuable holdings. These are its cimelia.
