Universitas Terbuka

Opened in 1984, Universitas Terbuka in Jakarta has a unique story. It’s not your typical university with bustling campuses. Universitas Terbuka was established to address a significant challenge. Many high school graduates couldn’t access higher education or find jobs. The Indonesian government saw a need for a different kind of university. One that could reach everyone, regardless of their location or circumstances. Universitas Terbuka, meaning “Open University,” was born. Inspired by the Open University in England, it adopted a distance learning approach. This innovative model broke down barriers to education. It embraced the philosophy that learning is a lifelong right, not limited by age or location. Initially, Universitas Terbuka offered four bachelor’s programs. These included State Administration, Business Administration, Economics and Development Studies, and Statistics. It also took over existing teacher education programs, updating them with new curriculums and materials. Today, Universitas Terbuka has expanded significantly. It offers a diverse range of programs. These span from diploma and undergraduate levels to master’s and doctoral programs, across four faculties. These cover Teacher Training and Education, Law, Social Sciences, and Political Sciences, Economics and Business, and Science and Technology. Imagine the impact this university has had. It has brought education to remote corners of Indonesia. It has empowered individuals who couldn’t attend traditional universities. Universitas Terbuka stands as a testament to the power of accessible education. It continues to fulfill its mission of “enlightening the nation’s life,” as stated in the Indonesian constitution.
