The story of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia is one of perseverance. It began much earlier than its official founding. In 1998 the Nahdlatul Ulama established a foundation. Its purpose was to develop higher education. The dream was an internationally recognized university. This ambitious vision took shape gradually. The first step was the establishment of the Sekolah Tinggi Agama Islam Nahdlatul Ulama in 2003.
A significant shift occurred in 2010. A plenary meeting in Wonosobo mandated direct management under Nahdlatul Ulama’s legal structure. This led to the dissolution of the foundation. All assets including the STAINU Jakarta were directly managed by Nahdlatul Ulama. A new body was formed to oversee higher education institutions. It was the executive body for Nahdlatul Ulama universities. This body paved the way for the Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia in Jakarta.
The university received official operating permission on June 18 2015. This was a momentous occasion coinciding with the first day of Ramadan 1436 Hijriyah. The initial launch included ten study programs. Growth continued. In 2016 the STAINU Jakarta merged with the university. This addition significantly expanded its academic offerings. The university now boasts sixteen study programs.
