Across the bustling streets of Jakarta, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta stands as a testament to Indonesia’s rich educational heritage. Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, often called UMJ, first took root not here, but in Padang Panjang. The year was 1955, a time of great change and growth in Indonesia. It started as a faculty of law and philosophy. By 1957, this fledgling institution migrated to Jakarta, transforming into the Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG). This teacher training college marked the beginning of UMJ’s journey. In 1958, another transformation. The PTPG evolved into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, nestled within the newly formed Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta. UMJ quickly adapted to the needs of a developing nation. The university added a Faculty of Social Welfare in 1961, followed by the Faculty of Tarbiyah in 1962. In 1963, Faculties of Law, Economics, and Engineering opened their doors. This rapid expansion demonstrates UMJ’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education. Over the years, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta continued to grow. It now boasts a diverse range of faculties, including medicine and health, economics, Islamic studies, law, engineering, social and political sciences, agribusiness, and education. UMJ also offers postgraduate and diploma programs. Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta also stands out for its modern and Islamic motto: “Terkemuka, Modern, dan Islami”, meaning “Leading, Modern, and Islamic”. This encapsulates the university’s ambition to be at the forefront of education while upholding its Islamic values. In 2012, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta was ranked 7,187th globally. This demonstrates its growing presence on the world stage. Today, UMJ remains a vibrant center of learning. It continues to nurture future generations of leaders and professionals, contributing to the intellectual and social fabric of Indonesia.
